Current Modern Conditions Impair Mitochondrial Function

Exposure to pollution, cigarette smoke (including e- cigs), antibiotics, bacteria, viruses, heavy metals, processed food additives and preservatives, sugar and artificial sweeteners, GMOs, pesticides, pain relievers, statin medications, and even stress hormones have been shown to damage mitochondria.

The conveniences that make our lives easier in the moment, may be the very things that decrease our quality of life in the long run. In fact, environmental factors contribute to about 80% of the diseases listed by the World Health Organization.

Damaged mitochondria are less able to perform the critical function of producing energy and eliminating toxins. When heavy metals from pollution accumulate in mitochondria, the body’s cells may become hypoxic, or unable to utilize oxygen ideally to maintain cellular health.

Additionally, the lack of nutrients in sugar, flour, and processed foods put a heavy burden on mitochondria to use junk material to produce energy, generating excessive free radicals and inflammation.
